What the Numbers Look Like in 2026

The post-pandemic work-model debate has settled into a more nuanced equilibrium than either side predicted in 2020–2022:

  • Hybrid (2–3 days in office) is the dominant preference across most professional roles. Stanford's WFH research shows ~70% of professional workers prefer this model.
  • Fully remote preference peaked in 2022 at around 38% and has moderated to ~20% as workers report missing in-person collaboration and onboarding for new hires reports challenges.
  • Fully on-site remains the preference for a small but stable minority — roughly 9% — often workers in early career or those with constrained home environments.

What Employers Are Actually Offering

The supply side has shifted significantly over the past two years:

  • ~12% of professional job postings are now fully remote (down from ~18% peak in 2022)
  • ~52% are hybrid (specifying expected days in-office)
  • ~36% are on-site (up from ~28% in 2022)

Many large employers — Amazon, Tesla, Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan, Disney — have moved toward 4–5 day on-site mandates. Most mid-sized professional services firms have settled at 2–3 day hybrid. Tech companies remain mixed but trending hybrid.

The implication: candidate preferences (heavily hybrid) and employer offerings (more on-site than candidates want) are increasingly misaligned, creating leverage for candidates with strong skills.

Employers moving from hybrid to full-on-site report 15–25% drops in candidate application volume and 8–12% drops in offer acceptance rates.
